IGAD Congratulates Somalia leaders on the Successful Conclusion of Dialogue on Election Modalities

Djibouti, 18th September 2020: The IGAD Executive Secretary, Dr. Workneh Gebeyehu (Ph.D) congratulates the people and leadership of Somalia for the successful conclusion of dialogue on electoral modalities.

Dr. Workneh expressed his deep satisfaction and appreciation for the orderly and peaceful dialogue. Dr. Workneh expressed his deep appreciation of His Excellency President Mohamed Abdullahi Mohamed’s statesmanship in convening an orderly and peaceful dialogue that has led to unprecedented output.

In particular, the IGAD Executive Secretary welcomed the agreement among the negotiating parties. He noted that “this display of unity and dialogue among the Somali leadership is Somali-driven and Somali-owned, and an indication of the ongoing political transformation that is establishing the pre-conditions for sustainable social and economic development, which will cement peace, security and stability in Somalia”.

Dr. Workneh expressed confidence that there will be a continuous improvement in the level of inclusion in political dialogue and that the people and leadership of Somalia will stay the course in the consolidation of democracy to keep the avenues open for peace building, reconciliation and shared prosperity in Somalia and beyond.

Executive Secretary reaffirmed IGAD’s unwavering commitment to supporting Somalia and thanked the International Partners for continuing in solidarity with the Government and people of Somalia. He called upon the international community to sustain its support for the democratization process, especially during this electioneering period.
